The folks over at Smart Data Collective have an interesting story today on Big Data and its (expected) impact on a variety of industries and business practices. Fraud (and fraud detection), it turns out, may be one area that is transformed by better data analytics. According to the article, by Monte Zweben, fraud analytics are posed to be transformed not just by “Big Data,” but by better and faster analytics. The article looks at a variety of industries, including consumer marketing and logistics that stand to benefit from the growth in data and data analytics. Fraud detection is one of them. Zweben cites statistics on the growth of fraud as a global problem. Kroll’s most recent Global Fraud Report found the number of companies falling victim to fraud has increased to 70 per cent. In the old days, startups would pull together funding from a small group of early “angel” investors and rush to get a product – any product- to market as soon as possible. The idea was to prove viability in the hopes of attracting larger investments that would let you actually develop the product you really want to sell. But that doesn’t work well for companies that want to solve really hard problem. Such projects, justifiably, need a longer runway that isn’t suited to vaporware or rapid product iteration. vArmour Networks, a Mountain View-based startup that emerged from “stealth” mode yesterday, is a good example of that latter kind of start-up. The company has already raised $42 million in three rounds, dating back to January, 2013. How Big Data holds the Key To Securing the Internet of Things

I’m seeing a lot of pre-conference promotion of content from the big Internet of Things Expo out in Santa Clara in early November. One interesting presentation that is worth checking out (the slides are already online) is James Kobielus’s talk on how IT professionals should address the security challenges of IoT. Kobielus is IBM’s program director for Big Data analytics product marketing. One of the challenges of talking about security in the context of Internet of Things is that the Internet of Things (IoT) isn’t a discrete technology, but an umbrella phrase that encompasses a lot of separate innovations: mobility, inexpensive sensors, wireless connectivity, Big Data and so on. One of the biggest moving parts in the IoT puzzle is cloud computing. Popular Web Sites Still Getting Gamed in SEO Attacks
