Researchers from McAfee have demonstrated how a flaw in a Belkin smart switch can be used to access other connected devices on the same network as the switch.
In-brief: connected medical devices pose a number of risks to patients, including the threat of “targeted killings,” according to a report by Intel Security. The fix: better application design and more public-private sector cooperation.
Intel unveiled a new Internet of Things platform this week dubbed (surprisingly enough) the “Intel IoT Platform.” The goal is to provide a unified platform for connecting diverse and distributed connected things. Given Intel’s big investment in security with the purchase of McAfee, its no surprise that security is a big part of the “value add” for the IoT platform. Intel says that its IoT platform promotes interoperability of network, operational technology and information technologies. The IoT Platform envisions Intel Quark™ to Intel Xeon, and Intel-based devices, gateways, and datacenter solutions with hardware-based root of trust. With hardware enabled identity and secure boot features, Intel believes that you can eliminate a wide range of malicious attacks and compromises. Intel’s IoT Gateway devices are based on its 2009 acquisition of WindRiver. They also wrap security intelligence from Intel’s acquisition of McAfee. Specifically, Intel has embedded anomaly and intrusion detection and prevention capabilities in […]
A new survey of consumer attitudes and expectations about technology finds that a strong majority of Americans expect wearable technology and biometric security to be common within the next decade. The survey, sponsored by the security company McAfee, asked 1,500 U.S. consumers about lifestyle and technology trends in the home and workplace. The results suggest that consumers are already adjusting their expectations about the future to include pervasive connectivity, a wealth of intelligent devices – and some of the problems that come with both. More than 60% of those surveyed by McAfee said they anticipate having connected appliances like refrigerators that will “automatically add food to a running grocery list if the product is running low.” A strong majority of those polled – 84% – said they were convinced their home security systems will be connected to their mobile device. “As technology, especially the Internet of Things, continues to rapidly advance and […]
The onetime technology wunderkind, who left a job working for Lockheed to turn his curiosity about computer viruses into a thriving, global corporation showed up at two Las Vegas hacker cons last week: B-Sides Las Vegas and DEFCON. He offered some off-the-cuff rebukes to firms like Google. He also rambled long and hard about the dark forces that pursue him: the U.S. government, the government of Belize, Central American drug cartels and script kiddies desperate for his (virtual) scalp. Everywhere he goes, people take his picture. Who are they working for? The phones and computers he buys are bugged. His movements are being tracked. Those in attendance were admonished to beware of government snooping — especially via mobile applications. “Without privacy there is no freedom,” McAfee intoned. Listening to McAfee rant, it’s easy to forget there were plenty of folks walking the halls of Defcon, Black Hat, and B-Sides […]
