Report: Home Depot A Common Thread Linking Trove Of Stolen Credit Cards

Home Depot said it is investigating “some unusual activity” on its networks and working with “banking partners and law enforcement,” after security blogger Brian Krebs named the company as a common thread connecting a trove of stolen credit card accounts that have appeared in underground forums.  Krebs reported on Tuesday that “multiple banks” see evidence that Home Depot stores are the source of a “massive new batch” of stolen credit and debit cards that went on sale this morning in underground “carding” forums. The breach is believed to have affected Home Depot stores throughout North America – around 2,500 stores in total. The company has held off from confirming a breach, so far. And as of early Wednesday, Home Depot’s home page made no mention of the incident. US CERT Warns About Point-of-Sale Malware

With news of the breach of big-box retailer Target Inc. still in the headlines, the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) issued a warning about the danger posed by malicious software targeting Point of Sale (POS) systems. CERT issued an advisory (TA14-002A) on Thursday asking POS owners to take steps to secure the devices, and telling consumers to beware.  The warning comes after a string of reports that suggest that malware attacking point of sale systems is on the rise. In December, researchers from Arbor Networks said they had detected an “active PoS compromise campaign” to steal credit and debit card data that used the Dexter and Project Hook malware. Dexter is a Windows-based program that was first discovered in December, 2012 by Seculert, an Israeli security firm. Tantalizing Clues in Dexter Malware Lead to Mystery Man…and Zeus

The Dexter malware is getting some media attention this week – and not just because the malware shares its name with Showtime’s popular drama about a serial killer by the same name. (Not that those of us tasked to write catchy headlines don’t love stuff like that – ’cause we do.) No, the Dexter virus caught the attention of malware analysts because it infects point of sale (POS) systems like electronic cash registers, kiosks and automatic teller machines (ATMs), rather than run of the mill laptops and desktops.
