Tech and Telecoms Fight to dominate ‘Internet of Things’ – FT.com

The Financial Times has an interesting piece on the ongoing push and pull to develop cross-industry tech standards to govern the Internet of of Things.   The article, by Daniel Thomas makes note of efforts by companies including Arm, Google and Vodafone to secure leading positions in the technology infrastructure that will provide connections to smart devices, even as firms like Apple and Google dominate the market for mobile devices and wearables that are at the vanguard of IoT. “The fragmentation and lack of technology standards could provide the biggest opportunity for telecoms operators in a fast-evolving industry already changing how people live,” says Matthew Howett, an analyst at Ovum tells FT. “There is a clear opportunity for an aggregator who is able to interconnect the myriad inoperable devices.” The article makes mention of the newly released ETSI specifications for Internet of Things (IoT) networks dedicated to low throughput communications. Online Authentication Group FIDO Alliance Grabs A Big Bone: Alibaba

The FIDO Alliance, an up-and-coming industry consortium aimed at simplifying online identity and doing away with passwords added IPO darling Alibaba to its Board of Directors, according to a statement on Tuesday. The FIDO (or “Fast IDentity Online”) Alliance announced that Alibaba Group’s payments business, Alipay will be among the first to deploy FIDO technology for secure payments authentication. On September 17, the company announced that it will use Nok Nok Labs’ FIDO-compliant  NNL™ S3 Authentication Suite to enable secure online payments via the Fingerprint Sensor (FPS) technology on the Samsung Galaxy S5. Alipay customers will be able to make payments and transfers using Alipay’s mobile application, Alipay Wallet by applying their fingerprint to the Galxy’s fingerprint sensor. “We look forward to participating on the FIDO Alliance board, and assuring that commerce and authentication are uniquely cooperative and seamlessly compatible,” said Ni Liang, Alibaba group, senior director, department of security, in a statement. ARM Eyes Role as Supplier to the Internet of Things

Writing for Fortune this week, Katherine Noyes has an interesting piece that looks at how ARM is looking to parlay its success in the mobile phone market into a dominant role as a supplier for the Internet of Things (IoT). “There’s a real opportunity here,” Noyes quotes Ian Ferguson, ARM’s vice president of segment marketing saying. AMD licenses designs to silicon makers like Qualcomm and AMD. Already, some of those designs are showing up in IoT products like fitness bands. That could expand – and mobile phones are the management interface for many IoT products, which also stokes ARM’s business. But the company thinks the real opportunity lies in commercial technology for verticals like infrastructure (smart cities), manufacturing and oil and gas exploration. “You’ve got highly valued assets, so preventative mechanical services can help improve efficiency by detecting problems before they break down,” Ferguson said. Nest, Samsung and AMD Back Thread For Home Automation

A week that has already been full of standards news for the Internet of Things added more with the unveiling of Thread, a proposed communications standard backed by Google’s NEST group that promises a “new and better way to connect products in the home.” Google was joined by Samsung, Freescale Semiconductor, ARM, smart lock maker Yale Security and Big Ass Fans (favorite company name ever) in forming The Thread Group to promote Thread. In a press release on Tuesday, the group said that the Internet of Things presents unique challenges that are not well met by existing wireless communications technologies such as Wi-Fi, ZigBee and Z-Wave. In contrast to those technologies, Thread focuses exclusively on network connectivity, not application-layer exchanges and connection management.
